ARTIST STATEMENT

My work begins in the knowing/sensing/feeling body. Rooted in somatic, body-centered ways of knowing, I use performance as an opportunity to engage embodied thinking, ask questions, challenge my assumptions, explore new realities, feel deeply, and experiment with processes whose outcomes I can’t predict. Dance is a dialogue between physical space, time, materials, and other people. It is practices anchored in the here and now that invite me to pay attention and operate fully in the present.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Dance is the place I go to be intellectually and physically curious and creative. As a teacher, I create a supportive space for students where the expectation is exploration. In my work as a creative practitioner/researcher and educator I am passionate about fostering environments where diverse voices can collaborate. My role as an educator is to offer opportunities for growth and the many different forms growth takes. Whether the classroom is a studio or a lecture hall, I encourage students to take risks and make mistakes to discover what is possible for them as movers, thinkers, writers, and artists.
